The other day, Harry Reid had a press conference the morning after he introduced his new after-midnight healthcare bill. During the press conference, he addressed those opposed to the healthcare bill.
To them I'm saying, you're being - you have a lack of understanding of what the problems in America are today. Spend a couple of days reading our mail. I just talked on the Senate floor about a letter I got last week. [A] man said, "I go to bed every night pr-praying. I don't know if I should pray to die, or pray to stay alive so I can help my 26 year-old boy, whose diabetes, because of lack of health insurance, has turned into Addison's disease."
What a heart-wrenching letter. The only problem; untreated diabetes doesn't turn into Addison's disease.
This is exactly why the bureaucrats shouldn't be building a new healthcare system. They don't have any knowledge of any of the science, nor the empirical data based on experience, to make these kinds of decisions.
It would be equally ridiculous if doctors were put in charge of how elections were to be run from now on. Doctors generally are very poor legislators and executors - with exceptions, of course. Ernie Fletcher, anyone?
Meanwhile, today Obama announced that they received 38,400 ways to save money in the federal government, and picked four from the group. Then an online vote determined which one of the four would be implemented in 2011. At this rate, we'll have them all implemented in only 38,400 years!
C'mon.
A recent poll showed that 66% of Americans favor smaller government and fewer government services.
This is all very bad news for the Obama administration and Democrats. But it's not great news for Republicans, either. The Bush administration significantly increased the size, scope and power of government as well. Don't forget that Bush created Medicare Part D, which was the single-largest expansion of government in our history.
That is why we, as the Libertarian Party, are presented with the opportunity to really emphasize to the voters that we have provided a consistent message for over 38 years, and therefore are the correct choice for reducing wasteful spending and government programs.
If you want big government, keep doing what you're doing. If you want smaller government and lower taxes, you need to vote Libertarian. If you want to help reach the goal of smaller government, get involved with the Libertarian Party.
